PROBLY NEITHER THE VALVE THAT SWITCHES TANKS IS UNDER TRUCK PROBLY AT CROSS MEMBER.IT WILL ACT UP ALOT OF TIMES BEFORE GOING OUT.CHECK IT OUT FIRST OR REPLACE IT AFTER CHECKING FOR POWER AND TRANSFER OF VALVE CLICKING WHILE SOMEONE ELSE SWITCHES TANKS FROM SWITCH.HOPE IT HELPS YOU

It should not cause no problems but instead of removing the tank leave it in the truck take out all the fuel in the tank and jus discontinue use of it. This will save you alot of time and trouble and i also suggest that if anyone besides you drives this vehicle then i would put a locking gas cap on it so it cant be accessed at anytime except by you.

A FORD EQUIPED WITH DUAL TANKS THIS YEAR MODEL HAS CHECK VALVES IN THE FUEL PUMPS .THE FUEL RUNS FROM THE REAR TANK WHEN IT IS POWERED ON TO A TEE AND INTO THE SAME LINE AS THE FRONT PUMP . THE PROBLEM IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FRONT FUEL PUMP THERE IS A CHECK VALVE ON THE FOOT AND IT IS NOT WORKING.WHILE THE TRUCK IS RUNNING WITH THE REAR FUEL PUMP ON IT IS PUMPING FUEL INTO THE FRONT TANK . IT WILL RUN OUT OF THE NECK WHEN IT IS FULL.THE FIX IS SIMPLE REPLACE THE FRONT FUEL PUMP. THEY DONT MAKE A CHECK VALVE REPLACEMENT I CHECKED I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU.

From what I can find out Ford did not use a fuel transfer valve in 1992. They ran both pumps to a common fuel line and used one way check valves to keep one pump from filling the other tank while keeping the entire fuel system pressurized. Your tank selector switch is actually switching pumps off and on, not a transfer valve. The problem Ford had was the one way valves failing causing one of the tanks to overflow. They have an external one way valve kit to solve this problem, but the valves are about $85.00 each.

May be easier to loosen rear box bolts,remove the
front bolts & tip up the bed, rather than lay on your back
& have to drop the tank & that way you don't have the
fuel removal issue,can stand there & just work on top
of tank

you have a bad dual tank switch valve might be staying in between tank switching causing the drain and lack of fuel issue.check fuel pressure under a load.

Where is the fuel tank selector valve exactly located

Just in front of the side tank is the selector.Very common problem.The rear fuel tanks pump quits.
